CONSOLIDATED TESTING

For those applicants who live a "considerable distance" from Madison (more than a six-hour drive), we have made arrangements to consolidate certain components of the hiring process.

Assuming you have submitted a complete application in a timely fashion, an invitation to participate in consolidated testing occurs twice per process. Consolidated testing dates for this process are October, 2010, and January, 2011. These dates are the only times in the process that such an option will be offered and there are no make-up dates!

If you choose to exercise the consolidated testing option (and you qualify as a "considerable distance" candidate), the format for the testing will be roughly as follows:

Written Test

  • 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
  • Site to be determined on UW-Madison campus

Physical Agility Test

  • First heat begins at 10:30 a.m. (subsequent heats dependent on number of candidates)
  • UW Sports Center – 1430 Monroe Street

Following the completion of both written and physical testing (and assuming passing scores in both), our internal admissions committee will convene to identify only those candidates who are deemed to be the most competitive. Not everyone who successfully passes the written and physical agility tests will necessarily be advanced to the next step - oral boards.

All those candidates completing written and physical testing will be asked to provide a phone number where they can be reached between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on that Sunday. This will enable us to notify candidates who are being advanced to the oral boards. Oral boards will take place the following week.

Be advised that MPD can offer no provision for the arrangement of travel, lodging and meal expenses. These are costs incurred solely by the candidate.

From a logistical standpoint, a candidate eligible for consolidated testing should contemplate a stay in Madison that could potentially run from Saturday (night before testing) to as long as the evening of Thursday (dependent on whether the candidate advances, number of oral interview time slots, etc.).

The highest scoring oral board candidates will then be backgrounded during the ensuing weeks. Assuming a thorough background process keeps you among the most "competitive" candidates, a return trip to Madison will have to be scheduled during March. The purpose of the March visit will be three-fold: one-on-one interview with the Chief of Police, a personality assessment, and a four-hour ride-along with a Madison Officer. (This can all be completed in a 48-hour visit).

If it is your intent to participate in the consolidated testing option, please submit a note to that effect with the submission of your preliminary application!
