Public Housing

What Is Public Housing? playground

Public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.  Public housing includes  apartment buildings, townhouses, duplexes, and single-family homes.

The Community Development Authority (CDA) provides public housing for residence only in the City of Madison.  (This does not include the other municipalities in Dane County.)  These properties are federally funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and administered by the CDA Housing Operations.

Am I Eligible for CDA Public Housing?

CDA determines your eligible based upon:

·        Annual gross income

·        Whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family

·        U.S. citizenship, or eligible immigration status

If you are eligible, a landlord and criminal history check will be done for the past 2 years.

CDA may deny admission to any applicant whose habits and practices may be expected to have a detrimental effect on other residents or on the property’s environment.

Reason for denial may include, but not limited to:

·        Insufficient Information

·        Negative landlord references

·        Eviction; eviction from Public Housing or a Section 8 Program

·        Negative behavior such as domestic battery, drug charges, or disorderly conduct

·        Owing money to a Housing Authority

How Is Rent Determined?

Your rent is determined by a combination of rental income and funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); the resident pays 30% of their income, and the government pays the rest.

Listed below are income limits for CDA (effective 3/19/2009):

1 Person $44,800
