Welcome to the City of Madison Parks Division!

As a city uniquely built on an isthmus, Madison is surrounded by 15,429 acres of sparkling lakes and has over 6,000 acres of parkland. The Parks Division maintains over 260 parks, one public swimming pool, 10 beaches, 4 premiere golf courses,  national and state award-winning Warner Park Community-Recreation Center, 4 off-leash dog exercise areas, an awarding-winning botanical garden & conservatory and 14 conservation parks. In the winter, the staff maintains the outdoor ice rinks and the cross-country ski trails.

Parks are for all seasons - get out and enjoy yourself!

  • In 2006, the Parks Division hosted 4,365 separate sporting events, and hosted 1,360 weddings, reunions, parties in the park shelters.

  • The average mowing cycle for parks and medians is 10-14 days - in the best of conditions.

  • The City of Madison has 270 parks and parklands and 5,800 acres of parks.

  • Madison has 1 acre per 35 residents. The national average is 1 acre per 160 residents. 

  • In 1975, Madison Parks mowed 770 acres turf; in 2000 it was 1250 acres.

  • In 1975, Madison Parks had 25 tennis courts; in 2000 there were 88.

  • In 1975, Madison Park had zero volleyball courts; today there are 30.

  • In 1975, Madison Parks had 35 basketball courts; in 2000 there were 130.
