The Madison Police Department would like to remind motorists that August 4 – August 10, 2013 is National Stop on Red Week. National Stop on Red Week takes place the first week of August each year and is dedicated to educating Americans about the dangers of red-light running through education and enforcement
As part of this week's activities we would like to remind motorists of the dangers of red light running and:
• An estimated 165,000 people are injured annually by red-light runners.
• The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that half of the people killed in red-light running crashes are not the signal violators.
• Ninety-seven percent of drivers feel that other drivers running red-lights are a major safety threat.
• One in three people claim they personally know someone injured or killed in a red-light running crash
The Madison Police Department considers intersection safety a top priority and will be working Red Signal Violation enforcement throughout the week and remainder of 2013. Please, do not run red lights. It may be your life or an innocent motorist/passenger you will endanger.
The Madison Police Department is committed to improving traffic safety in our community by increasing compliance with traffic laws through education and enforcement. Although law enforcement efforts are an important part of public safety, we rely heavily on the cooperation of the public to be aware of and to follow all traffic laws, whether as a pedestrian, bicyclist or motorist.
The Madison Police Department supports the "Zero In Wisconsin" campaign and believes that we all can make a difference. Please remember to drive safely and to "buckle up." State law now allows law enforcement to stop a vehicle when the driver is not observed wearing a safety belt. The Madison Police Department also reminds motorists that state law requires that vehicles yield right–of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks. Remember – don't drink and drive!
