Between calls for service, Police Officer Michelle Roof often stops out at south and west side basketball courts to interact with the youth. Realizing the uniform can sometimes be a barrier, she set out to find a different way to break the ice with the aspiring NBA stars. With rising summer temperatures, Michelle decided to visit a local McDonald's to purchase ice cream gift cards for the kids.
After offering to pay for a few cold treats, McDonald's Community Engagement Manager Blake Horras loved Michelle's idea so much that he donated 1,000 Free Dessert coupons to the Madison Police Department.
Thanks to Michelle's initiative and McDonald's generosity, this will be the "Summer of Cones" in Madison. Sergeant Meg Hamilton of our Community Outreach Unit says hundreds of gift cards will be handed out by our Community Policing Teams, Neighborhood Officers, Community Outreach Officers, and Patrol Officers.
"I know this will go a long way helping us in bridging those gaps and form some relationships and connections with kids in the Madison area." - PO Michelle Roof
