Yesterday, 8/2/21, Officers from the Madison Police Department conducted an enhanced enforcement project on W Johnson St near Bassett St. The project was focused on speeding and other hazardous driving behaviors. The area was selected due to the high concentration of pedestrian and bicyclists that share the roadway.
During the project a total of 17 stops for speeding were conducted. Two vehicles were stopped for speeds over 50 MPH in the 25 MPH zone. 1 vehicle fled from an officer's attempt to stop it (that investigation is continuing).
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association pedestrian deaths increased 46% over the last decade, while all other traffic fatalities only rose by 5%.
Please slow down and share the roadway with bicyclists and pedestrians - it's your responsibility.
These additional enforcement efforts are made possible through traffic overtime grants provided by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
