Today, the holiday spirit was alive and well in Madison, as a special event sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Madison in partnership with Walmart-East and the Madison Police Department brought joy and holiday cheer to local families. The event took place at Walmart-East and saw officers from CORE (Community Outreach and Resource Engagement) and the Black Officers Coalition joining forces with parents of students from Whitehorse Middle School for a holiday shopping experience like no other.
This unique event was a beautiful example of how strong community partnerships can make a difference. The collaboration between the Madison Police Department, Whitehorse Middle School administration, and parents of students created an atmosphere of unity, trust, and shared purpose. The officers weren't just there to observe--they were actively involved, shopping alongside parents to pick out special gifts for their children.
The twist on this year's event was a heartwarming one: instead of the officers shopping for the kids directly, they shopped with the parents. The parents were given the opportunity to select gifts that would be placed under the tree for their children on Christmas Day. This approach allowed the parents to take the lead in their gift-giving while also creating meaningful interactions between the police and the families. It was a perfect opportunity to build relationships and break down barriers, one shopping cart at a time.
The event also served as an important moment for the Madison Police Department to continue changing the narrative surrounding community-police relations. By partnering with local organizations and engaging with parents and students in a non-enforcement capacity, the department demonstrated its ongoing commitment to school safety, community support, and the creation of lasting relationships that go beyond traditional policing.
The 100 Black Men of Madison played a pivotal role in organizing and sponsoring this event, and Walmart-East generously supported the cause. Together, these organizations created an experience that touched the lives of families and fostered positive interactions between law enforcement and the community.
As we look ahead, this event marks just the beginning of what we hope will be many more years of collaboration. The Madison Police Department, the 100 Black Men of Madison, Walmart, and Whitehorse Middle School are all committed to nurturing these partnerships and continuing to make a positive impact on our community. This holiday season, we are reminded that the spirit of giving and connection can come from the most unexpected places--and from the most powerful partnerships.
Special thanks again to the 100 Black Men of Madison, Walmart-East, John Milton from Lafollette High School, and all the parents and community members who made this event such a success. We look forward to working together in the years to come to continue building a stronger, more united Madison. Happy holidays!
All my best,
Capt. Shannon Blackamore - MPD Community Outreach
