A Commitment to Peace and Democracy This Election Season

November 4, 2024 7:36 AM

As we approach this year's presidential election, I want to take a moment to reassure our community about the values that bind us together, regardless of the outcome. In our great democracy, the strength of our society lies not just in who wins or loses an election, but in our unwavering commitment to justice, fairness and the Constitution of the United States.

The Madison Police Department is prepared and ready to ensure that the electoral process unfolds smoothly. We are fully aware that elections can sometimes incite strong emotions and differing opinions. However, I want to assure you that we have plans in place to monitor any potential disturbances and respond effectively, should the need arise. Our primary goal is to protect the peace and safeguard the property of every resident in our community.

One of the most important lessons we have learned the past few years is how to manage First Amendment demonstrations and civil disobedience with respect and professionalism. Our experiences have equipped us with the tools necessary to foster dialogue and maintain order. I encourage everyone to read our recent Sentinel Event Report from the Quattrone Center for the Fair Administration of Justice, which details the strides we have made in responding to civil disturbances. This report reflects our commitment to continuous improvement and our dedication to serving our community.

On Election Day, and perhaps in the days that follow, we will have our Emergency Operations Center open and staffed. This will allow us to monitor events in real time, respond swiftly to any incidents and ensure the safety and security of our community. We are here to serve, protect and uphold the democratic values that define us.

It is vital to remember that no one person is greater than our democracy. We are a nation that thrives on diversity of thought and opinion, and it is crucial that we come together, regardless of our political divides. Our democracy is bigger than any candidate or party; it embodies the collective will of the people, and that includes all of you -- our friends, neighbors and fellow community members.

As we move toward Nov. 5, let us focus on what truly matters: coming together as a nation to unite and work toward a brighter future for our community and our country. I am proud to serve as your Chief of Police in Madison, Wisconsin -- the greatest city in America, in the greatest country on earth. Together, we will demonstrate our resilience and commitment to democracy on Nov. 5 and beyond.

Thank you for your trust and confidence in us. Thank you to the brave employees of the Madison Police Department. Let's show the world the strength of our unity.
