Request for Patience During Independent Investigation

January 4, 2025 9:47 AM

As the Chief of Police for the Madison Police Department, I want to address the incident that occurred on the evening of December 30, 2024, and to provide clarity on the ongoing investigation. First and foremost, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual involved. This is a profoundly difficult time, and our thoughts are with them.

We understand that incidents involving law enforcement can raise questions and concerns within our community. I want to reassure you that our department is committed to transparency and accountability. An independent investigation has been requested, and the Wisconsin Department of Justice- Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is leading this process.

Upon taking the subject into custody, our officers acted promptly by calling for emergency medical services. The subject was evaluated on-scene by EMS  and then transported to the Dane County Jail by officers. Additionally, once at the jail, officers provided immediate medical attention, and the subject was subsequently transferred to an area hospital where, tragically, he passed away.
