East District Blotter

Winter is here.

November 21, 2024 3:19 PM

As I'm writing this, Madison has just experienced its first snowfall of the season!

For MPD, the first few snowflakes often signal the arrival of weather-related crashes. The guidance that I give the members of MPD's East District is the same that I give any motorist:

  • Start early to account for slower road speeds or unexpected hazards.
    • Have a backup travel route in mind.
    • Let someone know when you're leaving, or when you've arrived.
  • Slow down and be extra-cognizant of your speed.
  • Take the extra moment to look before proceeding through intersections and turns.
  • Keep in mind that slick or wet road surfaces can increase your braking/stopping distances.
  • Share the road and give extra space to other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Make sure your vehicle is ready with good tires, topped-off fluids and weather-appropriate emergency gear.
    • Consider putting a high-visibility vest or outer layer in your car, in case you have to stop on the side of the road.

Lastly, I will plead with everyone to give extra space to those who are out on the roadways, especially those who are out there as part of their work.  Police, yes, but also firefighters, ambulance drivers, crossing guards, plow drivers, tow truck operators, and school bus operators.

With the holiday season upon us and some of the busiest travel days in the U.S. coming next week, please do your part to get yourself to your destination safely and with a regard for others.

If we all do our part, we can make Madison's roads safe for everyone out and about on days like this.

Safe travels and my best wishes for good times and good food to everyone out there!
