Local 11-Year-Old Continues Quest To Get Pet Oxygen Masks For Every Fire Department Posted 03/04/2020
The Madison Fire Department is now equipped with two sets of new pet oxygen masks thanks to an ambitious 11-year-old animal lover. Finn Sullivan of DeForest, WI is on a mission to make sure every fire department in Wisconsin is equipped with these specialized masks. In January, he sent a letter to Madison Fire Chief Steven Davis explaining his goal. Read more »

MFD Says Goodbye To Retiring Apparatus Engineer Dan McCosky Posted 01/10/2020
This week we say goodbye to Apparatus Engineer Dan McCosky, who retires after nearly 32 years of service! McCosky joined the Madison Fire Department on March 21, 1988. Previously, he was a firefighter at the Milwaukee Fire Department and also served with the National Guard. Before that, he was a volunteer firefighter and EMT at the Maple Bluff Fire Department. Routine Medical Call Leads Engine Co. 13 To A ‘Kindness Angel’ Posted 12/23/2019
A routine medical call one recent evening led Engine Co. 13 upon a happy accident— and a simple message: Be kind. When the Dane County 911 Center received an alarm from a home medical device, it sent Engine 13 and Medic 5 to the home of an east-side resident named Doris. Details of the call were slim, and crews weren’t sure the extent of injuries or the nature of illness. Read more »
DHS Brings 'Resilient Wisconsin' Campaign To Fire Admin and Station 1 Posted 12/20/2019
The Madison Fire Department’s Administrative headquarters and Fire Station 1 played host to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and Governor Tony Evers this week. The DHS invited first responders from all over the state to share their stories and experiences in a video campaign for the Resilient Wisconsin program. This program is designed to help first responders and others who are regularly exposed to traumatic events in the course of their work. Governor Evers was also interviewed for the project. Madison Needs A Ninth Ambulance Now Posted 11/11/2019
Last year, the City opened Fire Station 14 on Madison’s far southeast side, filling an urgent need for frontline fire and EMS protection in that area. Engine 1 Helps Woman Who Dropped Keys Down Parking Ramp Grate Posted 11/08/2019
Engine Co. 1 made one woman’s day last week after she accidentally dropped her keys down a parking ramp grate near Pinckney and Dayton Streets. The crew had just freed up from an EMS call at the YWCA downtown when they were approached by the distraught citizen. The keys, they learned, had fallen 30 feet. On March 8, 2019, a group of family and friends from South Wayne were headed to the Wisconsin state basketball tournament in their Suburban when they were involved in an accident with a semi. Service Dog In Training Gets To Know Firefighters At Station 5 Posted 09/24/2019
Station 5 was recently paid a special visit by a furry friend named Buddy! Buddy is in training to become a service dog for kids living with autism. Right now, Buddy is being trained by Bob and his family through a program called Dogs In Vests. This organization works to get dogs trained and paired with a child in need. Read more »
