Centering Racial Equity and Social Justice Posted 12/04/2020
Supporting and advancing racial equity is a priority of my administration. To advance and systematize that work, I have approved the establishment of an Equity and Social Justice Division within the Department of Civil Rights, and the hiring of a new Equity and Social Justice Manager. This new division will include the Equity Coordinator position which has recently been filled through transfer of the Neighborhood Resource Team Coordinator into the newly-defined, combined role. Displacement of Elderly Residents Posted 12/02/2020
Segoe Gardens, an assisted living community near the Hilldale Shopping Center, is displacing all its residents during the holiday season. The senior living complex, run by Independent Living Inc., is in trouble after failing to pay off long term debt. An unknown buyer is pushing 48 vulnerable residents out the door before renovations of the building begin. This has left the City and other non-profits that serve seniors scrambling to help these people find the housing and services they need. Read more » -

The Federal Government Must Mitigate the Impacts of any F-35 Deployment Posted 11/09/2020
The Air Force expects the F-35A squadron to arrive at Truax Field in Madison as soon as 2023, and it is crucial that federal lawmakers provide the resources needed to prepare for the significant impacts of their deployment. There may be federal funding available for the City to begin work to mitigate some of the noise issues that come with the planes. I am urging our congressional delegation to support a funding request. You can read the letter I've sent below. November 9, 2020 Dear Senator Baldwin, Senator Johnson, and Representative Pocan, Read more » -
Budget Spotlight: Equitable Economic Development Programs Posted 11/04/2020
Final decisions on the City’s 2021 budget are just one week away. With that in mind, I want to highlight some of the programs I’ve proposed in the budget that help address the challenges we are facing in our community. One set of programs and investments is focused on advancing equity and reducing disparities in Madison’s small business sector. To overcome the racial disparities we see in business ownership, we must invest in opportunities for entrepreneurs of color along with women, people with low incomes, and other underrepresented groups. Five Mayors, One Challenge Posted 10/28/2020

2021 Executive Operating Budget Message Posted 10/06/2020
This has been an unprecedented and challenging year. First we were faced with a global pandemic unlike anything we had ever seen before. Then we were faced with dramatic increases in unemployment, food insecurity, and housing insecurity, and economic distress in far too many households. We were also challenged anew to address the racial disparities that exist across our country and right here in our community. Read more » -
Reimagining Public Safety - Progress and Budget Priorities Posted 10/01/2020
The murder of George Floyd, the shooting of Jacob Blake, and the Black Lives Matter movement have renewed questions about the role of the police in our communities. We know that the Black community has been harmed by racial bias in policing and the criminal justice system. I am committed to both improving policing in Madison, and working with the entire community to reimagine what public safety means to our city. Read more » -

Pandemic Assistance for our Immigrant Residents-with clarifying information Posted 07/28/2020
While the COVID-19 pandemic has been hard for all of us, it has been particularly hard for immigrant families, as they face obstacles such as immigration status and lack of documentation that prevent or make it more difficult to access federal and state assistance.
