Modernize Metro Facilities

Adding Infrastructure to Thrive and Expand

Metro is in the process of major renovations of its current main facility on E. Washington Ave.

Repairs and upgrades include infrastructure to support to all-electric vehicles as well as needed safety improvements to keep Metro’s central maintenance hub running smoothly and efficiently.

Metro's main facility was originally built in the late 1970s with much of its infrastructure now well beyond useful life.

With a recent influx of federal funding, the pace of renovations has dramatically increased.

Electrical infrastructure has been upgraded to support all-electric vehicles and additional work bays and lifts have been added for more efficient maintenance and repairs of the entire fleet.

Recent funding has also allowed for an early remodel of Metro's dispatch and administration areas to improve and streamline day-to-day operations. This includes new driver restrooms and locker areas for everyone, a huge improvement to what was made available when this facility was constructed in the 1970s.

In addition, Metro has also recently purchased a second maintenance and storage facility on the east side of Madison to store the additional larger vehicles needed to implement its future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

This is extremely important as Metro is in the midst of making great changes to how its system operates with a complete service redesign in 2023 and implementation of BRT in 2024.
