Provisional Voting

There are two reasons you might cast a provisional ballot on Election Day.

  1. You do not have an acceptable voter ID with you at the polls.
  2. You are registering to vote on Election Day. You have a Wisconsin driver license, but do not list its number on your registration form.

Provisional voters have until 4 p.m. that Friday to get their ID or license number to the Clerk's Office. That gives you time to get to the DMV to apply for an ID, if needed.

If you need to get a Wisconsin ID, the Dane County Voter ID Coalition can help. Their helpline is 608-285-2141.

The City of Madison Board of Canvassers meets at 4 p.m. the Friday after the election. They count the provisional ballots of voters who provided their missing information.
