My father, William H. Tishler, served in the Army during the 1960s.

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, commemorating the first anniversary of the World War I armistice. In 1938, Congress designated Armistice Day as a national holiday, initially dedicated to honoring World War I veterans. In 1954, following World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed it Veterans Day to recognize all American veterans who have served in any war. On this 75th anniversary of honoring those who have served in the military, we salute our veterans — the brave men and women who have defended our nation and protected our freedoms. I am deeply grateful to my father and to all who wore the uniform and to the families who have supported them.

Let’s remember that our responsibility to veterans doesn’t end when they return home. It’s essential that we continue advocating for the resources and support they need, from healthcare and housing to education and employment. On behalf of our community, thank you to all veterans for your service and for the invaluable contributions you’ve made to our country.

There will be a Veterans Day Ceremony today starting at 10:00 am in the Wisconsin State Capitol Rotunda. More information is available on the Wisconsin Veterans Museum website.  (Learn More)
