Enhancing Accessibility and Community Engagement in District 17

posted

Hello friends,

innovation

As the Alder for District 17 on Madison’s Common Council, I'm committed to finding innovative ways to improve accessibility and engagement for residents across the area. Recently, I came across a significant challenge that underscores the need for the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park and expanded outreach by Madison Metro.

Current Accessibility Issues

After coming across a Madison Metro outreach event at Sequoya Library on social media, I did a search for closer options for D17 residents. Unfortunately, the closest libraries—Lakeview and Pinney—present substantial travel times from Sandburg Elementary School, which serves the district's elementary-aged students:

Lakeview Library:

  • 11-minute drive
  • 22-minute bike ride
  • 45-minute average bus ride
  • 1 hour and 28-minute walk

Pinney Library:

  • 12-minute drive

  •  28-minute bike ride

  •  35-minute average bus ride

  • 1 hour and 41-minute walk

For many without cars, attending these events is a challenge, highlighting a critical gap in accessible community resources.

The Need for the Imagination Center

Imagination Center

The Northeast Area Plan draft reveals several pressing needs in District 17 including:

- A significant number of families lack reliable internet.

- Higher poverty rates compared to other areas.

- A strong desire for more placemaking activities.

- The absence of a Neighborhood Resource Team (NRT).

- A high percentage of residents (owners and renters) are burdened by housing costs.

The proposed Imagination Center at Reindahl Park addresses these needs by providing a central hub for educational programs, digital access, and community events. This facility will make essential resources and opportunities more accessible to everyone in our district, fostering greater community engagement and support.

Immediate Action and Advocacy

While we anticipate the Imagination Center’s development, I am actively advocating for interim solutions. Specifically, I have requested that Madison Metro organize an outreach event at Reindahl Park this summer. This accessible location will allow our residents to connect with Metro’s services and receive valuable information, reducing the barriers to participation and engagement.

Moving District 17 Toward a Thriving Future

Creating a more connected and inclusive community requires collaboration and persistent effort. I encourage all District 17 residents and stakeholders to stay engaged, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources and opportunities they need.
