Funds Are Still Available for Small Businesses - Last year, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) announced the Main Street Bounceback Grant which provides $10,000 to new or existing businesses and non-profit organizations moving into vacant properties in Wisconsin's downtowns and commercial corridors. Funds are still available this year and WEDC is accepting applications until the funds runs out. Funds can be used to pay leases or mortgages, operational expenses and other business costs related to the newly opened location. Learn more here.

February is Black History Month, and Madison Public Library is celebrating this year's theme of Black Health & Wellness put forth by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Through their Live Well @ Your Library initiative, community partnerships, book lists, events and more, they aim to support Madison's Black community in finding and accessing health and wellness resources. They've got some great events coming up this month at the library that celebrate many different facets of the Black experience. Learn more here.
- Common Council recently changed the order of business and procedures for registered speakers during Council meetings. These changes stemmed from policy recommendations made by the Task Force on the Structure of City Government (TFOGS). The new Common Council meeting format will go into effect on Feb. 22, 2022. The Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison is soliciting submissions from artists for its 2022 sculpture exhibition on the William T. Evjue Rooftop Gardens and Olin Terrace. Art on the Rooftop is a free exhibit of public sculpture to help showcase the rooftop gardens and the facility as another "must see" Madison destination. Learn more here.

Due March 15th by 11:59 p.m. - Madison Arts Commission annual grants of up to $3,000 to support art project are now open and a special grant program called "Artists at Work" in the amount of $15,000 - $29,000 to support job creation for the creative sector will soon be posted on this MAC webpage.

Due Feb. 28th by 5:00 p.m. - The City's 2022 Budget includes $50,000 in grant funds to be distributed by the Madison Food Policy Council. The Madison Food Policy Council is encouraging community groups to apply for SEED Grants. More information here.

Steering Committee on 400 Block of State Street Redevelopment Proposal to Meet Feb. 23
At 5:30pm on Wednesday, Feb. 23, the Mansion Hill District of Capitol Neighborhoods, Inc., (CNI) will host a first neighborhood steering committee meeting to evaluate the redevelopment proposal put forth by JD McCormick Properties for 428 to 444 State Street. The steering committee will be working with neighbors, the development team, and other interested parties. The committee's goals will include a report that will form the input on the proposal from CNI.

JD McCormick Properties proposes to demolish the three mixed-use buildings at 428 through 444 State Street (see image above) and construct a new a five- to six-story, mixed-use building with 23 to 26 dwelling units and first floor commercial spaces. The developer will be seeking Demolition Permits and will need formal approvals by the Urban Design Commission and Plan Commission. You can find the project plans and land use application here.

Transit Network Redesign Citywide Virtual Community Meeting
Metro Transit has announced an upcoming community meeting on Thursday, Feb 24th at 6pm via Zoom, to discuss the recently released Metro Transit Network Redesign draft.

This is a citywide meeting, one that will be supplemented by a series of 8 - 10 geographically-specific neighborhood meetings to get community input. City staff recently met with residents in Dudgeon-Monroe and Bay Creek at their respective neighborhood association meetings. The geo-specific meetings will be scheduled in addition to allow for additional feedback.
This draft plan was designed to achieve the Transportation Policy and Planning Board's objective of a new network centered on the "mostly ridership" goal – focusing on fewer routes that are more direct and frequent, while providing coverage where it is needed most.

Face Masks Still Required to Ride
Even though Dane County's Face Covering Order is set to expire on 3/1, remember that masks are STILL required on Metro buses!
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is requiring all passengers and employees to wear face masks while utilizing all forms of public transit, including Metro Transit buses and paratransit vehicles. The federal order has been extended into March 2022.

Stu Levitan will give an illustrated talk adapted from his book Madison in the Sixties, recapping the decade's highlights and lowlights -- antiwar protests, the civil rights movement, the bitter battle over the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace, the UW's expanding impact, plus a special portfolio of Lost Madison, downtown buildings razed since then. You'll learn about -- or relive -- ten years that changed the city forever! Stu Levitan is an award-winning print and broadcast journalist, historian, long- time local official, and retired state employee.
