Resources Page and Updates for ALCS Incident

Resources for the Madison CommunityMadison stands with the families of Abundant Life community. This page is dedicated to connecting victims and the broader community to resources and accurate information about the tragic events that happened on December 16.

This Facts and Questions page provides more information about what happened. From the webpage:

“The Madison Police Department is committed to transparency and will continue to release information that can be used to improve public safety. This must be balanced, however, with our commitment to the victims and survivors of the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison.

Two people died and six others were injured during this shooting. Additionally, evidence suggests the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This incident has now entered the investigation phase, and the information we can release is limited. This phase takes time. We recognize people have questions, and we will answer them in due time. Until then we ask you keep the victims and survivors in mind and respect their right to privacy.

The Madison Police Department is dealing with a flux of ever-changing information. We thank journalists for recognizing this and working with our department to get accurate information out to our community.”

MPD Chief Shon Barnes Announces Resignation

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes notified the Common Council on Friday that he will resign from his position as Chief of Police effective February 1st, 2024 to take a job as Chief of Police for Seattle. He has recommended that Assistant Chief John Patterson serve as the Interim Chief until a new Chief is appointed. From Chief Barnes’ letter: “I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made together. We faced significant challenges, including the aftermath of civil unrest, distrust in policing, and the unprecedented global pandemic. However, through our collective efforts, we have strengthened community-police relations and implemented a crime reduction model known as stratified policing which has created a safer Madison.”

The Madison Police and Fire Commission is responsible for hiring Chief Barnes’ successor. The Commission will soon outline its search plan for a new Police Chief. An Interim Chief will likely be appointed until a new Chief is hired.

I am grateful for Chief Barnes’ service to Madison, for all of his work to build and implement data-driven public safety initiatives, and especially for his leadership during the very difficult events of the past week. I wish him the very best in his next chapter. If appointed, I’m confident that Assistant Chief Patterson would provide excellent leadership during this transition period.

Second Public Input Meetings Scheduled for Playground Replacements at Kennedy and Portland Parks

As a reminder, the playground equipment at both Kennedy Park and Portland Park in District 3 will be replaced in 2025 and the public input process to shape the new equipment is happening now. The initial public input meeting that included both of these parks’ playgrounds on December 5th included an overview of the playground replacement program and a discussion of residents’ input on design decisions during breakout sessions. Two separate follow-up virtual meetings have now been scheduled, one for each park, where staff will present two playground concepts based on residents’ feedback.

Here are the links to meeting #1 presentations and notes for each park as well as the zoom registration link for each park’s second meeting:
