Citation Ordinance at Transportation Commission

Update

This ordinance was approved by the Transportation Commission.

This was an ordinance update only. This gives us an option to help address fare issues, but there are no active plans to start issuing citations.

Any program like this would need to be thought out thoroughly and taken back to the Transportation Commission for approval.

There will also be no marketing messages put on buses that refer to Metro employees issuing citations.

If we were ever to do any signage related to fines for not paying a fare, it would be presented to the Union and other Metro staff for review and input.

We would also bring that back to the Transportation Commission for review.

The City's Transportation Commission is looking at an ordinance tonight that allows for Metro employees to be able to issue a citation for not paying a fare.

This agenda item is just to update the city ordinance. We do not have a program yet in place.

This program is NOT intended for drivers to issue citations. It would be a supervisory or management function.

The most immediate outcome of tonight's agenda item is that we can place signs on the bus that say something like "failure to pay your fare could result in a fine."

We will have some internal groups taking a look at the possibility of issuing citations, but that would only be after thorough discussion of how to set up the program and training of employees.

Information materials that will be reviewed at the Transportation Commission tonight are below:
