Tips for Those Affected by a Power Outage
postedIf your household is or was among thousands affected by storm-related power outages this week, there are a few safety tips to keep in mind:
Portable Generators
Do not bring portable generators inside. Portable generators produce carbon monoxide, a odorless and colorless gas that can make you ill or even cause death. When using a portable generator, make sure plenty of fresh air is flowing through your living space.
Running a portable generator poses risks, too, even if your garage door is open. The wind direction can affect whether carbon monoxide is leaving your garage or being pushed back in.
Food Safety
The food stored in your refrigerator or freezer may be compromised. According to the CDC, food will stay safe for up to 4 hours in a refrigerator if the doors stay closed. Food will stay safe for 48 hours in a full freezer and 24 hours in a half-full freezer.
