Meet Firefighter/EMT Sam Wood
postedWhere are you stationed?
Station 7 on McKenna Boulevard.
Why did you want to work for the Madison Fire Department?
I went to school in Madison growing up, so it was an integrative part of my upbringing. Being able to give back to the one-of-a-kind community that Madison is was my top priority when applying to different departments.
What is something you enjoy doing that is uniquely Madison?
The lakes! They are a focal point of Madison, and it’s tough to imagine the city without them. Getting out boating, paddle boarding, or using the lakefront loops is how I get the most out of them.
What is something you enjoy about the territories you’ve served?
Station 14’s territory (Dairy Drive) is a unique territory. More populated during the day hours due to the amount of industry, but it still has a large residential presence. It also includes the Beltline, so our calls can be very diverse.
Looking back at the Recruit Academy, what was the most challenging part?
The most challenging part of the academy was navigating the different aspects and expectations throughout the different stages of the Recruit Academy. Being a part of Class 60 is an honor, and I wouldn’t want to experience it with a different group of people.
What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD
If you don’t get in your first or second time, keep applying! Half the battle of anything is showing up and getting your name in the hat. Don’t give up!
