Firefighter/EMT Chris Schmid

Where are you stationed?
I currently work at Station 1 (W. Dayton Street) on the 'C' shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I had the opportunity to do a ride-along with the Madison Fire Department my senior year of high school. I was impressed by the professionalism and the high-quality care that was provided by the crew. The firefighters on shift that day really made me feel welcomed and explained exactly what they were doing, and why, in a way that I understood at the time without having any prior experience. This opportunity solidified my desire to join the fire service after high school.

What is something you’ve come to love about Madison or enjoy doing that is uniquely Madison?
Madison truly has so much to offer. There are always events and things to do throughout the city. My wife and I are looking forward to spending a lot of time outdoors with our one-year-old son at the farmers markets, Henry Vilas Zoo, and many other fun activities this summer.

What advice would you give someone hoping to join the MFD?
It is a very competitive process and can require applying more than once, but don’t let that discourage you. Keep working on bettering yourself every day and get involved in the community.
