Medic 8C Receives 'Team City' Award

Justin Salsano and Nicholas Mittelstedt with their Team City Awards
Early on a frigid January morning, Firefighter/Paramedics Justin Salsano and Nicholas Mittelstedt were heading back to the firehouse. They’d just successfully revived a patient who had gone pulseless and transported that person to the ER. After restocking their medical equipment and returning to the road, they received their next dispatch: a structure fire on Commercial Avenue.

Salsano and Mittelstedt, aboard Medic 8, arrived first on scene. During size-up of the property, they found someone trapped on their second-story balcony with active fire inside the building. Together, they set up a ladder and helped the woman down to safety. They immediately returned to the building, this time to perform search and rescue inside the apartment and the rest of the second floor, to verify that everyone else had evacuated safely.

While they’ll tell you it’s all just a part of the job, it’s also true that their actions helped save another life that day. For this, Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway honored Salsano and Mittelstedt with a Team City Award. The quarterly event recognizes City employees for the outstanding work they do in service to others.

Medic 8’s experiences that day highlight the perseverance and versatility of our firefighter/paramedics-- to go from a demanding EMS call straight to a demanding fire call, and to meet the needs of each situation without batting an eye.

Congratulations, FF/PMs Salsano and Mittelstedt, and thank you for your service to our community!
