Meet Fire Protection Engineer Matt Hamilton
postedTell us about what you do as Fire Protection Engineer.
Being a Fire Protection Engineer entails a lot more than people may think. I spend a lot of my time working on plan reviews, but also have many interactions between inspectors and other working teams. One aspect of my job is to work with other departments in our city when new structures are being built, and I make sure the builder is following all the fire requirements before building.
Why did you want to work for the Madison Fire Department?
When this job opened, I was very interested because of the job experience I had, and I thought I would have a good understanding of the role. I also wanted to work for Madison because they have a very progressive Prevention Division that is well supported.
What was your career prior to MFD?
I worked with construction since I was just a young boy. But my longest career was as a project manager/estimator for fire sprinkler systems, and I did this for 23 years. About 10 years ago, I began working as a volunteer firefighter, and I currently still work as one on the side for the Stoughton Fire Department.
Is there anything you’d like to share about yourself?
I really enjoy being outside. I spend a lot of time up north with my wife and dogs, going fishing, as well as gardening. I enjoy cooking and trying new foods/recipes.
