MFD Responds to Chimney Fire, Nobody Injured or Displaced
Incident Details
The Madison Fire Department was called to a home on Sumac Drive for reports of smoke and flames around a wood-burning fireplace. Upon arrival to the home, Engine Co. 9 did not see fire outside the fireplace but could see wisps of smoke at the ceiling and near the mantel.
Ladder Co. 2 went to the roof to investigate the areas around the chimney chase. Meanwhile, Ladder 1 personnel also went outside and observed fire in the exterior wall of the fireplace. Although flames weren’t visible, glowing heat was noticeable through the metal siding. Ladder 1 began opening up the metal siding and insulation board at the affected area. Firefighters applied water to the fire and achieved a quick knockdown.
Homeowners reported first noticing a problem about an hour after starting a fire in the fireplace, and they immediately called 911. No injuries were reported. Damage from the fire was contained to the exterior, and the occupants were not displaced from their home.
