Madison - Larry Nelson, city engineer, announced the selection of Jeanne E. Hoffman as Facilities and Sustainability Manager. Hoffman will manage the city's architectural staff and services centralizing the management of the city's inventory of almost 300 buildings. And, Hoffman will lead city staff in the development of a citywide sustainability plan to reduce energy use of city facilities and the city's carbon footprint in accordance with the city's adopted plan Building a Green Capital City. "Most cities the size of Madison have an agency that manages its buildings," said Nelson. "This position will allow us to better coordinate the construction and maintenance of city buildings and address both the challenges posed by dramatic increases in energy and the need to address global warming at the local level." For the past four years, Hoffman has been a Mayoral Aide for Mayor Dave Cieslewicz working with the Departments of Public Works, Transportation and Planning and Development. She was the lead staff on the Mayor's Energy Task Force, which developed the Building a Green Capital City Plan. She also chaired the space needs committee, and developed budgets and timelines for the first remodeling of the city's administrative offices in two decades Prior to working for the city of Madison, Hoffman was Executive Director of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin. "In developing a sustainability plan, we need to establish base data, determine realistic goals, and establish standards to meet those goals," Hoffman said. "It is important to clearly show that energy-efficient improvements can save energy, save money, lower emissions, and improve air and water quality." Hoffman will begin her new position on May 6, 2007.
