Downtown Plan Public Meeting Scheduled for November 5
A public meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 to receive input on the development of Madison's new Downtown Plan. The meeting will be held at the Overture Center's Promenade Hall. Doors will open at 5:00 PM for an informal open house. A presentation will be given at approximately 6:00 PM, and be followed by a series of interactive break out groups on: Downtown Living, Downtown Working and Business, Moving Around, Recreation / Culture / Entertainment, and Sense of Place(s). The open house portion of the meeting will feature work from local design professionals who have volunteered their time to develop preliminary illustrations of concepts focusing on the Lake Monona and Lake Mendota frontages, Madison's skyline, and other important views of and within the Downtown. These were identified in previous public meetings as important areas to focus on in developing the Downtown Plan. In June, a series of public meetings was held to solicit people's "big ideas" for the future of Downtown. Approximately 140 people participated in these meeting and many more have added their ideas since that time. Based on this input and principles in the City's Comprehensive Plan, City staff developed a series of general concepts for further public discussion before they are more fully developed. This meeting will provide a venue for those discussions. The process for developing the Downtown Plan began in April and is expected to conclude in the summer of 2009. Upon the completion and adoption by the Common Council, the Plan will provide the framework necessary to guide individual actions of the City and others so that they work together towards a common desired future.
