MFD Names New Medical Director

The City of Madison Fire Department has named Dr. Christian Zuver as its new medical director. Dr. Zuver comes to Madison following a Physician Fellowship with the Orange County EMS System (OCEMSS) and Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC). The Medical Director's position is contracted through UW Health, so in addition to his duties with the Department, Dr. Zuver will work as an Emergency Department Physician for UW Hospital and Clinics, and serve on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Christian Zuver is a former paramedic/firefighter from Virginia. He graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in June 2004, and completed Orlando Regional Medical Center's emergency medicine residency program in June 2007. EMS is the out-of-hospital practice of medicine, and Dr. Zuver's field background and experience afford him an additional layer of credibility with EMS personnel. Dr. Zuver replaces Dr. Joseph Cline, who has served as interim Medical Director since the death of the Department's former Medical Director, Dr. Darren Bean. The Department extends its deep gratitude to Dr. Cline for his dedication to maintaining continued excellence in training and case review. UW Hospitals and the Department conducted a nationwide search for a new Medical Director, and Zuver said he's glad for the opportunity. "The City of Madison Fire Department is well regarded for its innovative approach to emergency medicine," Zuver said. "I feel fortunate to be a part of such a high-performance system, and look forward to working with this team to ensure the best possible pre-hospital care for residents." Among Dr. Zuver's chief initiatives are paramedic education and training. A key interest is high definition simulation training that enables providers to keep skills sharp for high-risk, low-frequency procedures.
