Extensive Damage to Home After Fire Causes $150,000 in Damage

Shortly before 12:30 am Sunday morning, two people escaped injury from an early morning fire located at 3329 Chicago Avenue. Another resident was at work at the time of the fire. As firefighters arrived on the scene, flames and smoke were blowing out of several windows on the first floor. Once the firefighters gained entry to the home, they encountered heavy black smoke. The fire was quickly extinguished once the fire crews found the seat of the fire. One dog and two cats survived, but a puppy died as a result of the fire. Two other cats are unaccounted for. Red Cross is assisting the family with immediate needs. The family has insurance. Damage to the home is estimated at $150,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters remind everyone of these safety tips: • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, in each bedroom or sleeping area, and outside the bedroom doors. • Test your smoke alarms every month. • Have a home escape plan and practice it twice a year. • When the alarm sounds, get out and stay out. • After you have escaped, call 9-1-1 from a safe place. • Never go back inside the building for any reason. • Please visit www.madisonfire.org for more safety information.
