On Sunday, October 17th shortly after 10:00 pm, Fire Engine #9 was called to an alarm investigation at the Hilldale Ace Hardware Store, located at 414 North Midvale Boulevard. When crews arrived to the neighborhood store, they looked through the windows and noticed heavy smoke throughout the building. The Lieutenant immediately called in a full fire response, which brought in additional assistance from Engine 4, Ladder 2, Ladder 1, Medic 9, Engine 3 and Car 31. Engine 9 Crew gained entry to the building and heard cracking and popping at the South end of the building. They walked through the building and gained access to the warehouse area through a doorway and started to extinguish the flames. The large warehouse garage door was forced open by another fire crew from the outside, in order to help ventilate and assist in extinguishment. Firefighters found a fork lift in the warehouse area and sprayed water on the gas tank in order to keep it cool. Black smoke and flames were seen after crews cut a ventilation hole in the roof of the building, but was quickly extinguished. No injuries were reported. Damage is estimated around $500,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
