Fire Displaces 10 People On Thanksgiving Day

On Thursday, November 25th, City of Madison Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire at 17 N. Wickham Court shortly after 6:00 pm. When firefighters arrived at the 8-unit apartment building, smoke and flames were not visible. Upon entering the building, a haze of smoke was observed on the second floor hallway. Fire crews forced open an apartment door and encountered heavy smoke and flames. The fire was quickly extinguished, but 2 hours later, firefighters returned to extinguish a rekindle. Everyone escaped without injuries. Ten people (8 Adults, 2 children) were displaced as a result of the fire. Apartment #4 suffered major fire damage, other units had smoke and water damage. Three of the 8-units were unoccupied. Madison Police assisted at the scene. Madison Metro provided a bus to keep occupants warm, while Red Cross assisted the occupants with immediate needs. The fire is under investigation. Estimated damage is $150,000. No one has renters insurance. The City of Madison Fire Department and the American Red Cross recommend the following: •Obtain renters' insurance to cover your possessions. •Renters' insurance pays for damaged, destroyed, or stolen personal property. •This insurance is not very expensive, but it is important to have because your landlord's insurance will not cover damage to or loss of your possessions. •Start with the company where you already have an insurance policy, such as car insurance, because discounts may be available if you carry more than one policy with the same company.
