Adopt Ice Partnership Meetings

posted

In the winter of 2009-2010, Madison Parks launched an innovative program to maintain outdoor ice rinks. The Parks Division partnered with neighbors and interested individuals to assist in the maintenance of the ice. After major snow storms, parks staff first priority is safety and plowing of roads, bike trails, sidewalks and parking lots. After those priorities are addressed, then staff could turn to ice rink maintenance. But with the Adopt Ice Partnership, citizens pitched in after a snow storm to remove the snow from the ice rinks. This allowed parks staff to get the rinks in prime condition for skating much more quickly. The Adopt Ice volunteers at Westmorland Park took their job even a few steps further with daily scheduled maintenance- from snow removal, to nightly flooding, to opening and closing the warming shelter. We are proud of the success of this program and are looking to use the Westmorland Park group as a model for more groups this winter. Olbrich Park, 3301 Atwood Ave., Nakoma Park, 3804 Nakoma Rd and Heritage Heights Park, 701 Meadowlark Dr. each have a group of committed volunteers who are planning for daily scheduled maintenance for ice rinks in their neighborhoods. There are two Adopt Ice Partnership meetings scheduled for these new groups as well as anyone who is interested in joining an already existing Adopt Ice Partnership group. • West Side: December 9, 7p.m. at the Madison Parks Goodman Maintenance Facility, 1402 Wingra Creek Parkway • East Side: December 13, 7:30 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 5202 Cottage Grove Rd.
