MadiSUN Program Launches New Online Solar Program

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz joined the U.S. Department of Energy at Isthmus Engineering today to launch the city's new online solar map program. The new map application will help citizens and business owners evaluate the potential for solar energy at their home or business. Nationwide, the Solar Map is the first web-based tool that indicates the exact location of sunny and shady areas on a property or building. The map was developed in cooperation with the Department of Energy as part of Madison's participation in the Solar America Cities initiative. "This new, web-based tool removes another barrier to solar installations in our city," Mayor Dave Cieslewicz said. "Together with the work of our solar agent, the new program will help more homeowners and business owners make use of solar technology." The Solar Map shows where sunny and shady spots are on any property and building in Madison. Users also can estimate potential energy production by drawing a solar array on their roof or yard and get information about rebates, tax credits and grants. In addition, the map also shows existing solar installations and solar owners are encouraged to submit their information to be included. To use the map, go to www.cityofmadison.com/solarmap. Residents and business owners can also contact Madison's solar agent with additional questions about solar, its costs and the installation process (www.madisun.org). Any resident or business owner who is interested in a solar installation is also eligible to receive a free on-site solar assessment and technical report by the solar agent.
