Hawthorne Library Offers Computer Skills Classes

January 5, 2011 - Madison, WI - Madison residents looking to develop their computing skills in the New Year will have the opportunity to learn the basics, or refresh their skills, on Tech Tuesdays at the Hawthorne Branch Library (2707 E. Washington Ave., 246-4548). Classes begin in January and continue through the end of April. Meetings include sessions on computer use, internet and email basics, power searching, mobile phone use, and Craigslist and blogging. Space is limited, and registration is required; registration opens 3 weeks prior to the date of each class. All events begin at 9:00 a.m. Space is available in the following classes: Web Browser Showdown on February 1: Join us for a head-to-head comparison of Internet Explorer and Firefox. We'll look at the different options and features of each browser and briefly examine the other Internet browsing options. Basic mouse and keyboard skills are required. Some experience browsing the web is preferred. Intermediate Word 2007 on February 8: In this course, we delve deeper into Word 2007 to cover topics such as styles and formatting, headers and footers, tables, images and charts, and more. Some experience in the basics of Word 2007 is required. Introduction to Google Documents on February 15: Learn how to use Google Documents to upload, share, and edit files with anyone anywhere for free. Google Docs is ideal for group projects and other collaborative efforts. A Google account is required for this course. Mobile Phone Basics on February 22: In this one-hour tutorial, you'll learn how to use your phone for text and picture messaging, email, browsing the web and more. This course will be driven by your questions, so please bring your phone with you! Power Searching with Google on March 1: We will present tips and tricks for faster search and better results. This class is intended for people with some experience searching online who are looking to improve their skills. Basic computer and mouse skills are required. Facebook 101 on March 8: An introduction to the popular social networking site for those new to Facebook. We'll cover topics such as finding people and groups, sharing pictures and videos, and protecting your privacy. Excel 2007 Basics on March 15: In this introduction to Microsoft Excel, you'll learn how to create a basic spreadsheet, enter and edit data, format cells, and use basic features such as AutoFill, AutoFit, and AutoSum. Power Point 2007 Basics on March 22: Learn how to create a basic presentation, edit slides, and understand printing options. Online Job Searching and Applications on March 29: Learn how to use online forms to fill out job applications, post your resume online, and find jobs using sites like Career Builder and Job Center of Wisconsin. Craigslist 101 on April 12: Learn how to search the classifieds site and place ads of your own. We'll also cover tips for selling items on the site. Intermediate Microsoft Excel on April 19: In this course, we'll learn how to sort and filter data, create absolute references, use the IF functions, and more. We'll also cover conditional formatting, cell and object linking, and using the Chart Wizard. This class requires knowledge of MS Excel Basics. Create Your Own Website or Blog on April 26: Learn how to use free online tools like Blogger and Tumbler to create a simple website or blog.
