VITA Income Tax Assistance Begins at Madison Public Library on January 29

Volunteers will be available to help individuals prepare and file basic Federal and Wisconsin income taxes at four Madison libraries from January 29 through April 14, 2011. Assistance is available at the following libraries: Central Library, 201 W. Mifflin St., 266-6350 Saturdays, January 29 - April 9, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Call 266-6350 to register. Some limited drop-in help may be available in the case of cancellations Lakeview Branch Library, 2845 N. Sherman Ave., 246-4547 Mondays, February 7 and 21, March 7 and 21, and April 4, and Thursdays, January 27 - April 14, 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Call 246-4547 to register. Pinney Branch Library (AARP Tax Assistance), 204 Cottage Grove Rd., 224-7100 Tuesdays, Feb. 1 - April 12, 1:30-4:30 pm Free tax assistance through half-hour appointments with AARP volunteers. Call 224-7100 to register. Sequoya Library (AARP Tax Assistance), 4340 Tokay Blvd., 266-6385 Tuesdays, February 1 - April 12, 1-4 pm. Free tax assistance through half-hour appointments with AARP volunteers. Please call 266-6385 to schedule an appointment. Individuals seeking assistance must call ahead to schedule an appointment. Free tax filing of Wisconsin and Federal taxes will be done on site. Income tax assistance is available for low- to moderate-income individuals, individuals with disabilities, non-English speaking taxpayers, and the elderly. In addition, the program assists individuals who qualify for homestead credit or the earned income credit. The VITA program is aimed at those for whom paid assistance may be out of reach. VITA volunteers may only fill out and file returns that use the following forms: 1040EZ 1040A with Schedules 1, 2, 3, and EIC 1040 with Schedules A, B, C-EZ, EIC, and R Form 1040V (Payment Voucher) Form 1040ES (Individual Estimated Tax Payment) Form 2441 (Child and Dependent Care Credit) Form 8863 (Educational Credits) Form 8812 (Additional Child Tax Credit) WI Form 1, 1A and WI-Z WI Homestead Credit (household income must be less than $24,500) If customers are married and filing jointly, both spouses must be present. About VITA: The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is a cooperative effort by the Internal Revenue Service and many individual states, including Wisconsin, to provide income tax assistance to low-income individuals, handicapped or elderly. Volunteers trained by the Internal Revenue Service and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue prepare basic income tax returns free of charge at VITA sites.
