DETECTIVES SEEK LEADS IN CUT WIRE BUSINESS BREAK-INS

The Madison Police Department (MPD) is investigating a series of business burglaries where electrical and phone wires have been cut as criminals look to defeat alarm systems. MPD Crime Analysts have documented 15 similar crimes since last October. In most cases, access is gained by prying open rear doors. Taverns, small grocery stores, restaurants, and other businesses have been hit in the North, East, and South MPD Districts. Most break-ins have occurred along the East Washington Avenue corridor: between Milwaukee Street and Highways 39 & 90. They have happened between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. The criminals' targets include: ATMs, gaming machines, safes, and cash boxes. It is not known how many cases might be linked, but investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014. Callers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward.
