West Side Home Suffers Extensive Damage

Three adults and two dogs were in the west side home at the time of the fire, which caused $250,000 in damage. Everyone including the dogs evacuated from the home. Two adults were treated and released at the scene for minor injuries. Visible smoke and flames were reported to 911 Communications Center at 4337 Travis Terrace, a single-family home. When firefighters arrived around 8:00 pm, heavy smoke and flames were coming from several windows of the home and the garage area. Firefighters attacked the fire with several hose lines, using foam and water. The fire was extinguished at 8:35 pm. The home suffered extensive fire and smoke damage throughout the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The residents have insurance. Red Cross was also contacted to assist the occupants. The home was not compliant with the City smoke alarm ordinance. * * * City of Madison Smoke Alarm Ordinance States: All residential buildings within the City of Madison, shall have smoke alarms in place which meet one of the following requirements: o Hardwired smoke alarm with a battery backup • Currently installed hardwired smoke alarms with no battery backup shall be allowed to remain in service until such time as the device must be replaced in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer, no smoke alarm shall remain in service longer than ten years. o Smoke alarm powered by a non-replaceable, non-removable battery capable of powering the smoke alarm for a minimum of ten years. Smoke alarms installed in the following areas: o In each bedroom o In each sleeping area o Within six feet of each door leading to a bedroom or sleeping area of each unit o On each floor of the building
