Tips for remaining safe during a time of high temperatures

In recent days, The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for southern Wisconsin through Thursday evening (July 21st, 2011). High temperatures have been forecasted to rise between 92 - 97 degrees; with heat indices ranging between 102 - 108 degrees. The public is reminded to pay particular attention to the following to avoid heat related illnesses: 1. Keep hydrated with the appropriate amount and types of liquids. 2. Stay out of direct sunlight to keep body temperature regulated. 3. Use facilities where air conditioning is available during hours of elevated temperatures. There are several cooling centers in and around the city, and those locations are noted on the Ready Wisconsin Website, with additional heat awareness tips. United Way of Dane County (dial 211) is yet another helpful community resource. 4. Remain in contact with the elderly, persons with chronic health conditions, and individuals with mobility issues as this population of people may need additional assistance. 5. Make sure that animals have appropriate cover from the sun and available fluids as their ability to escape the high temperatures can be limited. Based on the recent heat wave, residents of Madison should make it a priority to keep themselves safe, and keep in close contact with anyone who may experience problems related to the excessive heat warning. Heat stroke and exhaustion are serious conditions, and anyone experiencing any symptoms of these conditions (lightheadedness, weakness, and fainting) should seek medical attention immediately!
