Madison Arts Commission Announces $91,775 in Arts Grants Funding
2013 Madison Arts Commission Grantees
At their May 21, 2013, the Madison Common Council approved the recommendations of the Madison Arts Commission (MAC) to award $91,775 to 56 of Madison's artists and non-profit organizations who infuse Madison with its lively cultural arts scene. Leslee Nelson, Chair of the Madison Arts Commission said, "In 2013, the Madison Arts Commission granted more funding than ever before to a record number of artists and arts organizations. More than 90% of those who applied to us received a portion of their requested funding which they will use to leverage nearly two million from other sources to provide arts and cultural activities in our City." Chair Leslee Nelson explained the importance of City support by saying, "Though MAC provides a small percentage of seed money towards these projects, we understand how vital City support is to making these events happen. Especially for new projects, even a small amount of City funding provides an endorsement that groups use to find additional resources required. Mayor Soglin was excited to see the breadth of proposals: "Madison is a wonderful city and Madison Arts Commission grants help strengthen our neighborhoods and serve as powerful incentives to further economic growth. Our artists and arts organizations play a strong role in placemaking and creating an even better City in which to live, work, and play." The Madison Arts Commission is a municipal commission that funds artistic activities and initiates cultural programs that integrate, support, and advance arts and culture as an essential part of life in Madison. MAC's grant program is funded by the City of Madison with additional support from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin.
