District 1 Alderwoman Lisa Subeck Statement on Cancellation of Elver Park Fireworks

Madison, WI - City of Madison District 1 Alderwoman Lisa Subeck, who represents the Elver Park area, released the following statement regarding today's announcement that Madison Festivals will move Madison's annual Rhythm and Booms event to downtown Madison and the resulting cancelation of the neighborhood oriented Elver Park fireworks. "Downtown is the perfect place for the larger Rhythm and Booms show, but it is disappointing that the big event must come at the expense of what has long been a smaller, more neighborhood focused Fourth of July fireworks celebration at Elver Park. The Elver Park fireworks have been a proud southwest side tradition for more than 25 years and provide an important opportunity for residents of all of our diverse southwest neighborhoods to come together and celebrate. "The Mayor made the decision to hold just one large, citywide fireworks event downtown without involving the City Council members who represent the neighborhoods surrounding Elver Park. As the Alderwoman for the district in which the park is located, I am committed to working to save the southwest side fireworks celebration. I urge Mayor Soglin to change course and allow the Elver Park fireworks tradition to continue."
