Mattress and Box Spring Recycling Starts Monday July 29th

The City of Madison will kick off a new recycling program on Monday July29th when it begins recovery of mattresses and box springs. The new program will be funded by a $10 fee of each mattress and box spring placed at the curb for collection by the Streets Division. "We are very excited to be launching this new recycling effort," Madison recycling coordinator George Dreckmann said. "Each year we collect between 10,000 and 12,000 mattresses and box springs. We will now be able to recycle each and every one of them." The mattresses and box springs will be recycled by the Ohio Mattress Recycling company of Cleveland, Ohio. They recycle the metal springs, polyurethane foam, padding and wood. The metal is recycled along with other scrap metal. The wood is turned into mulch. Foam padding is made into new padding. The heavier fabric padding will be sued to stuff archery targets. "90% of each unit will be recycled," Dreckmann said. "Only the cloth covering is sent to the landfill." Effective July 29th all mattresses and box springs placed at the curb for collection or brought to the Streets Division's drop off site must have a $10 fee sticker. Stickers can be purchased at any Madison Public Library, the City Treasurer's office : 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Streets Division offices: 1501 W. Badger Rd., or 4602 Sycamore Ave. or by mail from the Streets Division, 1501 W. Badger Rd., Madison, WI 53713. Stickers can also be purchased on line at www.cityofmadison.com/epayment.
