Bleach Drawings by Barbara Kirby
September 3, 2013 through November 1, 2013 Madison Municipal Building, 215 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Weekdays, Saturdays 9:00 AM - Noon Opening Reception Saturday, September 7, 10-Noon The Madison Arts Commission is pleased to announce that Barbara Kirby will be exhibiting "Animals" a series of her recent bleach drawings in ARTSpace from September 3 through the end of October. This series is composed of gestural drawings depicting wild and semi-domestic animals. She created the drawings by applying bleach, using various drawing instruments, on archival colored paper. Each drawing is an expressive portrait aimed at capturing the essence of each animal. In her artist statement she writes, "I enjoy experimenting with unusual materials and processes. This led me to the technique I used to create these drawings. Using bleach, I draw the images on archival colored art paper using feathers, Q-tips, sponges, brushes, and other tools. The bleach removes color from the paper and forms the image. I also sometimes enhance the images with permanent ink. It is my goal to express in these sketches an essence of each animal's beauty and nobility." The Madison Arts Commission's ARTspace program is open to all Madison visual artists who would like to showcase original two-dimensional works in highly utilized city spaces.
