Police and Fire Commission Statement on Search Process for New Police Chief

Commissioners have received constructive comment from a variety of sources regarding our standards and procedures for the appointment of our next Police Chief. After thoughtful consideration we have determined that the best interest of the City of Madison and the Police Department will be served by opening our process to the widest range of interested applicants. While we are deeply gratified by the strength of the Department and the leadership available among its current personnel, the recognized national stature of the Department and the City encourages us to welcome candidates both from the Madison Police Department and more broadly from the profession at large. We will now implement this decision for an open search by preparing appropriate notice, application, and examination materials and conducting a rigorous selection process and appointment process. We expect to announce our working calendar for the appointment process within the next ten days.
