New Playground Coming to Goodman Pool

Madison Parks Foundation donates $15,000 toward project.

During Madison’s hot summer months, thousands of children and families make their way to the Goodman Pool and its adjacent playground to relax, to play and to cool off. The playground, with its beach-themed play structure and sand-based play area, is as popular as the pool itself.

However, the sand creates a variety of maintenance problems.  As an abrasive, it prematurely wears and deteriorates the playground equipment.  It also gets tracked into the pool area, causing unnecessary clogging and damage to the pool’s water filters.

The Madison Parks Foundation is proud to provide a $15,000 grant to the City of Madison Parks Department to replace the playground at Goodman Pool. The total cost of the project, which will take place in spring, is expected to be approximately $26,000. It will feature a poured-rubber surface covered by artificial turf, creating a much safer and sand-free area for children and families to enjoy. Targeted to young children, the new design encourages kids to crawl, climb and play.

“Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Irv and Bob Goodman, the Madison Parks Foundation created an important partnership with the city that brings thousands of families out to enjoy Goodman Pool each summer,” said Madison Parks Foundation Board President Grant Frautschi. “Now the Foundation's gift fulfills an important need while also honoring the Goodman name, renewing their legacy once again.”

Like those who started the Madison Park & Pleasure Association 120 years ago, the Goodman Brothers have left an amazing legacy of citizen support that continues to benefit Madison and its residents.

The Goodman Pool Opening Day is June 12, 2014.  Swimming Lesson Scholarships are still available.  Please contact http://www.cityofmadison.com/parks/pool/poolScholarship.cfm for more information or call (608) 266-4711.
