MPD excited to usher in new era

The Police and Fire Commission has named Michael C. Koval as the next chief of the Madison Police Department, and the men and women of the MPD are excited to welcome and work with Chief Koval as he pursues his vision for the 629 member department.

Chief Koval brings with him a wealth of experience from both inside and outside of the department.

The other finalist considered by the PFC, Captain Carl Gloede wishes Chief Koval only the best, and vows to work closely with Chief Koval as he works to move the department forward.

Acting Chief Randy Gaber says Chief Koval brings a strong skill set to the job:

“Mike Koval is a veteran member of the Madison Police Department who will bring a wealth of knowledge and creativity to our department and the policing profession.  We have benefited greatly from Mike’s assignment to our Training Team as he has trained, guided and mentored our recruit officers for the last 16 years.  Mike’s transition to Chief will ensure a continued legacy of strong leadership at the top of our organization.”

A few additional words from Acting Chief Gaber:

“It has been an honor and privilege to have been able to lead the Madison Police Department for the last seven months as the Police and Fire Commission has conducted their process for hiring our next Chief.  I have observed first-hand how the men and women, both commissioned and civilian, continue to work hard for the citizens of Madison.  I look forward to continuing the proud tradition of policing excellence here at MPD as we being our next chapter of leadership under Chief Koval.”

In the coming weeks, Chief Koval will take over leadership of the department which will include a formal ceremony welcoming him to his newly acquired position as Chief of Police.
