Zoning Text Amendment Redefining “Brewpubs”

posted

The City Council approved a zoning text amendment that allows brewpubs to increase their annual volume from 5,000 to 10,000 barrels and allows for machine-capping of bottles.

Alder Scott Resnick, sponsored the amendment, “I am always happy to help create opportunities for growth for small businesses in Madison. This change will allow Madison brewpubs to increase production within their current footprint.”

City of Madison Zoning Administrator, Matt Tucker, explains what this means for Brewpubs that are currently operating in the City, “Brewpub operations that are currently approved need not take any steps to revise their approval documents with the City.  Any approved brewpub may increase production volume and introduce mechanical bottling without necessitating a zoning approval from our office.”

Henry Schwartz, of MobCraft Beer, is happy to see the City update this definition to align better with state and national standards, “This ordinance change allows brewpubs to get larger volumes of beer into the market, in a wider verity of product offerings. It is a great step in helping Madison grow as the great craft beer city it is, and shows how supportive our city is to the craft beer movement.”

Alder Resnick agrees, “By offering this legislative change Madison will continue to be a leader in the BrewPub industry."

This change goes into effect May 15, 2014.
