Mayor Soglin Walks E. Johnson Street: City Support Encourages Residents to Turn on Johnson

The Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association and City of Madison will showcase joint support for the "Turn on Johnson" campaign this Thursday afternoon, July 3rd. The Mayor’s walk will begin at 4pm on the corner of E. Johnson Street and Blount Street and last approximately 2 hours. In addition to Mayor Paul Soglin, District Two Alder Ledell Zellers will also be present to meet with business owners along the E. Johnson Street Business corridor.
"Turn on Johnson" is a business development initiative. The effort is a partnership between the City of Madison, MG&E and the Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association, in response to road construction that has severely strained businesses in the region from North Butler to North Baldwin streets.
During the walk, "Turn on Johnson" campaign flyers will be handed out in addition to a new E. Johnson Street coupon offer that includes 14 neighborhood businesses.
The Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association (TLNA) is working with its neighborhood business partners to highlight its unique business district through the "Turn on Johnson" campaign. Its aim is to heighten public awareness by promoting neighborhood businesses through a series of exciting events.
"Turn on Johnson" Project Coordinator Nik Simonson said, "Tenney-Lapham’s neighborhood charm is embraced by our small-town atmosphere, walkability and bike-friendly culture; many residents are able to walk or bike to work, to shop, to dine and take advantage of abundant urban recreational opportunities. It is important that our businesses thrive and continue to be a destination." Mayor Soglin added, "Construction is an unfortunate by-product of maintaining our city infrastructure and it is important that we do all we can to minimize the impact on our vibrant business districts such as Johnson Street."
