It's Downtown Moving Time Again

posted

It'The Streets Division is bracing for another week of tenant migration as the annual downtown move out starts.  The week of August 11th, the Streets Division will be working extensively in the Downtown/Isthmus area picking up the piles of old furniture and trash that come out annually.

“The Streets Division is ready to handle all the extra material that will come out to the curb during moving days,” Madison strategic initiatives coordinator George Dreckmann said.  “We will have crews starting to work in the area on Monday and we will stay at it throughout the week.”

Downtown/Isthmus area residents are encouraged to fill up their refuse and recycling carts and put them out to the curb starting on Monday August 11th.  The Streets Division will be emptying refuse and recycling carts everyday between Monday August 11th and Friday August 15th.  Area residents are encouraged to fill up their carts and roll them to the curb anytime.  The carts will be emptied so residents can fill them up again. Refuse and recycling carts can be filled as often as needed during the week of the 11th.

“Using the carts for refuse and recycling is easier than lugging bags of material to the curb,” Dreckmann stated. “Using the carts will keep the downtown neighborhood cleaner and make this year's move out the easiest ever.”

Residents on the move also have many items that could be reused.  In an effort to reduce landfill waste and increase community benefit the Streets Division is again partnering with the UW–Madison WE CONSERVE and the Office of Sustainability, Goodwill Industries, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and the student organization ReThink Wisconsin to collect and donate reusable items.

UW–Madison is again hosting two "Donate and Take" sites where people can drop off useable goods or browse the donations for wanted items. Goodwill and St. Vincent de Paul donation centers will also be set up at two campus-area parking lots and several downtown apartment buildings Aug. 11-14. Please note that sites within apartment buildings are accessible only to building residents.

Most clean and usable items will be accepted except mattresses, box springs, futons, TVs, computer monitors, and large appliances. Locations and hours for all sites are listed below, or call 608-501-7200 to schedule a pickup during Moving Days.

An e-waste recycling site will be set up in Lot 51 to accept working and non-working electronics. Most items with a cord or batteries can be accepted, including computers, monitors, phones, small appliances, and game systems. Unfortunately, TVs and computer monitors cannot be accepted.
