New Residents Urged to Review Safety Recommendations

The MPD would like to remind you about the importance of locking car doors and removing valuables from view when parking.
In recent weeks, there have been spikes in car break-ins in both our East and South Districts. There have been more than a half-dozen reports regarding windows broken, and items removed from parked vehicles in the East Towne Mall area. In the South District, it has been unlocked vehicles that have been targeted by a thief or thieves. MPD crime analysts say there have been ten similar theft cases since early July on streets generally south of Monona Bay.This is also the time of year when new residents are arriving in Madison, and a review of recommended safety strategies could be helpful to many:
 
The MPD recommends you:
 

• Lock doors and close windows.
• Criminals are often opportunistic: briefcases, sunglasses, clothing, keys, gym bags, and small change are all often tempting to a thief.
• Don’t leave valuables in car.
• If you have no choice: place them in the trunk, or under a blanket etc. before you park. Do not transfer electronics and other items when other people in the parking area can see what you are doing.
• Do not leave your garage door opener on the dashboard or front seat. Put it in your
  glove box, hide it, or take it with you.
• Never leave personal identification documents, vehicle ownership title, or credit cards in your vehicle.
• Try to park in high-traffic, well-lighted areas.
• Never leave your car running unattended, even to dash into a business, store, etc.
