posted
Madison, WI – Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center has been certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as LEED-EB(link is external): O&M (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Existing Building Operations and Maintenance) at the Gold level. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council(link is external), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.
In the summer of 2007, Monona Terrace became the first convention center in the nation to earn a LEED-EB Silver certified level. Earning the Gold level supports the facility’s commitment to the environment and green business, distinguishing Monona Terrace as an industry leader. The facility has seen steady support from green conferences and conventions, serving as a return on the investment in getting certified in 2007 and recertified in 2015. The environmentally conscious conferences and conventions booked through 2014 represent an estimated $16,724,523 in overall economic impact to the Madison area based on industry DMAI(link is external) calculator(link is external).
Monona Terrace partnered with nonprofit sustainability consultants at Leonardo Academy to provide guidance and support to achieve the Gold level certification. Leonardo Academy Senior Project Manager Bill Rattunde says, “Monona Terrace has successfully embraced LEED-EB: O&M as a management tool as opposed to just a certification system. The result is that they are driving continuous improvements in their operations that positively impact their environmental footprint, indoor human environment and bottom line.”
“Building operations are nearly 40% of the solution to the global climate change challenge,” said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair, USGBC. “While climate change is a global problem, innovative organizations like Monona Terrace are addressing it through local solutions.”
Monona Terrace achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
Some significant measurables used in obtaining this certification include:
For Monona Terrace, this award also recognizes the legacy of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright(link is external), who managed and designed the Monona Terrace project from 1938-1959. Before the world was talking about green buildings, Wright pioneered an organic approach to construction that honored the relationship between man and nature, and employed local material and solar influences.
This designation also reflects the ongoing environmental commitment made by the City of Madison and Dane County. Monona Terrace Executive Director, Gregg McManners said, “We believe that the certification supports the efforts of the city and the county to be efficient with our natural resources. We want to be a leader in energy and materials use and to support our area’s reputation of being a sustainable place to live, work and play.
